Birthday Month YOP Around the Clock

I’ve been having a wonderful birthday month. (A little joke but I mean why not?) I went for tacos, a hike, and to a folk music festival with my kids. Bob and I drove to Oklahoma to visit my Mom and sister. I got to stop over at Bonny’s on the way there. I went to a yarn shop in Oklahoma City with a yarn-bombed bicycle in the window and — yes — bought yarn with birthday money. I even finished knitting a project!

We visited my Mom.
I got to see Bonny and a haunted winery.
I finished Freya’s purple Lodge Sweater. She loves it!

I am keeping up with my Celtic Mists mystery knitalong. The designer makes the clues short and sweet! While I love alpaca’s softness and drape, I normally prefer wool for elasticity. But the way this yarn is spun keeps it springy. I love working with it!

I started another beanie on the trip with yarnmama’s superwash merino in Damson Plum. Another yarn outlier for me, this superwash is lofty and buoyant. I’m a fan! And the color is royal.

No frogs have shown up in my pond this year, but never mind. My sister gifted one to me for my birthday. We call him Okie.

The Red Road Home

Have I ever blogged about my Grandparents’ farm? I can’t imagine I haven’t. I think about it, and them, every day. Even in Kenya, I look at the red soil and rolling hills and think of Oklahoma.

My cousin Cyndi and her husband are restoring the farm in the hopes of retiring there someday. She’s started a facebook page so we can follow along!

Much Drive, Little Knit

The boys and I left Oklahoma a day early to trek east to see the Heavener Runestone.

My oldest especially wanted to see it. It was a beautiful spot, and while there have been some questions about its authenticity, I do believe it is possible that Vikings could have come to this location via the route suggested. I wish they would excavate the cave site because I think it could be enlightening. Regardless, we had a lot of fun!

We stayed over at a bed and breakfast in Mount Vernon, Missouri. On the way through St Louis we stopped at a wonderful fair trade store – Zee Bee Market – and the store manager got a great pic of us!

I’ve had plenty of time to knit as the boys have shared driving duty with me, but this is all I’ve managed.

And that was the best pic I could manage of the knitting on my lap in the car. Still, it won’t be long until I’m on sleeve island!

Bathtub Full of Yarn? Yes, Please!

One of my planned destinations on my trip to Oklahoma was SWAK Knits in Guthrie. I had visited many years ago, and I was really glad to find they are still there. The shop is bursting full of all kinds of goodies, including a bath tub full of yarn!

I picked up some new driftwood needles and colorful yarn, which the shop owner, Keely, caked for me.

The gold is Blue Sky Alpacas Highland Wool, and the blue and green is Mrs. Crosby’s Steamer Trunk Merino in Peacock.

I love marigold. It’s one of my favorite colors, but I never wear it since it doesn’t look very good on me. I couldn’t help myself with this yarn, though. I have two skeins and I’m thinking of making mittens, since I can look at that gorgeous color on my hands!

I’m not sure what the Mrs. Crosby’s is destined to be.

The boys found some treasures of their own at one of the antique stores.

There is one more yarn store in OKC to visit!
