In Betwixt Yarn Advent

I was very pleased with my yarn advent from Lizzie Bird Yarns. It’s an “in betwixt” set for the days between Christmas and New Year’s. As you can see, it came with each skein lovingly wrapped, plus lots of special goodies, including a sweet set of gingerbread stitch markers.

I chose the Log Cabin set, and I love the subdued colors and gold sparkle. As fate would have it, I have a skein of Campfire Yarn’s Cranberry Forest with gold stellina that is a perfect match for this set. It was a gift, and I’m excited to put these together for a Yuletide shawl later this year.

I have to say, I am really glad I purchased a yarn advent and didn’t just go with my DIY idea — which honestly was kind of a let down. I love the advent chest, though, so I’ll try to come up with a different idea to use it next year.

Did you receive any yarn over the holidays? Are you already planning your holiday knits for 2022, as I am? I would love to hear about it.

The Gift to Myself that I Keep on Giving

This year, I purchased an advent chest. Today, I spent a couple of hours winding the small cakes of yarn that I had left over from my yarn advent last year. I put 13 mini-skeins of yarn in the odd drawers. The even drawers have a chocolate. I also have one seasonal stitch marker in the first drawer, and I have a pin on the way for another drawer. Yes, some of the drawers have more than one thing in them.

My plan is to knit a mitten ornament with each mini-skein in December, and then on the 24th make the icord to hang them on for a garland. 12 mittens! 12 days of Yuletide!

I also did purchase a yarn advent this year from Lizzie Bird Yarns. It’s a little smaller than the one I purchased last year, which is a good thing.

Do you have any special holiday knits in the works? I am knitting a few gifts, but I’ll blog about those another time.

Go Big or Go Gnome

📸 Sarah Schira

Merry Christmas! If you are really into gnomes, you can knit a hat, mittens, and pullover with these super adorable yard fellows, as I am now calling them. This is a free pattern by Sarah Schira. (Knitty website link) I would probably not knit them in red and blue, as they are looking too All-American for me. I think I would go red and green because, hey, you might as well go big or go gnome for Christmas. What color would you knit your gnomes?

Meep was a big hit with JoJo. Now we are waiting for the child to awaken so we can open presents. I made cranberry orange waffles for breakfast. Later we can FaceTime with the other kids.

Moondrake Yarn Advent Day 25. FLOOF!
The entire yarn advent, lined up in my order.

I have to admit I feel a little overwhelmed by my choice of advent pattern and how to organize the colors. I almost wish I had just knit them in the order I opened them so I didn’t have to think about it. Any suggestions?

I hope you have a wonderful holiday today!

Christmas Eve Stocking Cap

📸 Churchmouse Yarns and Teas

“And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap” — from A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore

Whenever I see a stocking cap, I think of this poem, and Ebenezer being visited in his nightgown and cap, and elves, tomten, and nisse too, of course. This worsted weight stocking cap is a free pattern. Jolly Stocking Cap by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas (Website link)

📸 Skeindeer Knits

Skeindeer Knits has her own Nisselue stocking cap pattern in fingering weight that is also free. (Ravelry link) I really like the idea of knitting a stocking cap in self striping sock yarn.

This led me to the Wikipedia entry on Nisse, which is a fun read. I’m going to start calling our gnome Pete our “tunkall” or “yard fellow.”
